GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
An “armistice” is an agreement by warring parties to lay down arms and stop fighting. World War I ended on November 11, 1918 with an armistice, and after that, the United States celebrated “Armistice Day” every November 11th. The holiday was officially renamed “Veterans Day” in 1938, but it took a while for the new name to catch on.
In 1943, the U.S. had been at war for two years–since the December 7, 1943 bombing of Pearl Harbor. The November 11, 1943 Colorado Transcript included this wistful editorial:
NOT THIS BUT NEXT ARMISTICE DAY, PERHAPS
“A NEW armistice has been declared, an armistice in which all men will be free and equal, an armistice in which women and children, homes and firesides will be secure, an armistice in which the whole world can commence to live again with confidence and security. These are words if spoken on this Armistice Day would warm and cheer the heart of every living soul, and make Thanksgiving Day a day of great rejoicing and Christmas a day of glad tidings, peace on earth, good will toward men.
It took almost two more years, but by November of 1945, we were able to celebrate being at peace again.
In other World War II news, that same November 11, 1943 Transcript reported the following:
An old tank at Camp George West was heading to the steel mill to be disassembled, melted down, and turned into a new tank.
The Cub Scouts were collecting scrap paper to help with the war effort.
Tires were strictly rationed, as were meat, shoes, gasoline, and many other consumer items.
Restrictions were loosening somewhat on coal and eggs.
The four major grocery stores in town jointly ran a large advertisement designed to teach consumers about using food economically.
Rather than producing new license plates for 1944, the state planned to issue small tags that were to be attached to the 1943 plates.
Golden and Jefferson County had done a fine job of contributing to the Denver Area War Chest drive, which operated with the slogan “Giving is Fighting too.”
Approximately 550,000 servicemen had been honorably discharged since the war began. The 200,000 men who had aged over 38 were released to work in essential industries or agriculture. “Of the remaining 350,000 discharges a large majority was for physical and mental disability.”
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
