A New Type of Event

Tracy Evanko, who maintains the Goldentoday calendar, was tired of looking at the words “CANCELED,” “SUSPENDED,” and “POSTPONED” all over our calendar, so she has revamped it. She removed all the canceled events through the end of March and instead has sought out the many virtual events that people are scheduling. For example:

Sunday:
9AMPranatonic is offering a Gentle Yoga class this morning.  You must SIGN UP ON-LINE to register. They are offering yoga classes free for this first week, so it’s a great time to try it.

Church Services – Many of Golden’s churches are offering online services or sermons on their websites, including the following:

Calvary Episcopal Church
Golden Presbyterian
Faith Lutheran Church
First United Methodist Church
Hillside Community Church
Jefferson Unitarian Church
Rockland Community Church

If your Golden church/mosque/temple is providing online worship, please let us know, and we will add you.

Tracy has also compiled a bunch of virtual events offered by Golden’s Cultural organizations and businesses. You can see that list on the calendar under “ANYTIME VIRTUAL GOLDEN EVENTS.” You can watch films from the Colorado Environment Film Festival, meet the artists and learn about the Members’ Show at Foothills Art Center, or do a craft or other activity through the Jeffco Public Schools. The Jeffo Libraries have all sorts of online resources. You can download ebooks and audio books, watch movies, read newspapers and magazines, and lots more. See the Calendar for links and descriptions of all these possibilities.

The Golden History Museum has lots of online content, and every Sunday they plan to post a new video about part of their collection. A few days ago, Museum Director Nathan Richie gave us a tour of the Reynolds Cabin in the History Park. Sometime today, Visitor Services and Interpretation Coordinator Megan Murphy will introduce you to one of the full-time residents of Golden History Park. Keep an eye on their YouTube channel!

Most of the Golden Beer Talks over the past 7 years are available as podcasts, so you can listen to them at any time. We’ve all been hearing a lot recently about the 1918 Influenza Epidemic. There was a Golden Beer Talk about that! Listen to Frank Blaha’s November 2018 talk: The Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918.

I think a lot of these virtual events are just ramping up. Tracy will keep adding them to the calendar and I’ll keep reporting on them in the upcoming days.

Golden History Moment

Coors Brewery in about 1960 – Click to enlarge

The March 24, 1960 Golden Transcript included the following:

It is difficult to express the deep concern this community feels for the Coors family in the tragic disappearance of Adolph Coors III. Even those who did not know Mr. Coors personally feel his loss and sense the anxiety of his family. This fine family is such a vital part of Golden that this concern is only natural. Who in this entire community would hesitate a moment to do any possible for the Coors family to help them during this time of distress?… We hope that the Coors family soon can find relief from its distress.

Adolph Coors III was the grandson of the brewery found and was Chairman and CEO at the time of his disappearance. He was kidnapped on February 9, 1960. Investigators eventually learned that he was killed almost immediately by his kidnapper, but in the months following, the family received ransom notes demanding money for his return. Mr. Coors’ body wasn’t found until September of 1960, so it was a long, stressful summer for the Coors family and the Golden community.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and many thanks to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
