CITY MEETING

6:30PM GURA Board Meeting @ City Hall
GURA’s two biggest areas of change are both located in the West Colfax Urban Renewal area. The redesign of West Colfax to make it more bike and pedestrian-friendly is in design phase. The redesign of the Bachman property to include flood control for Lena Gulch is likewise in design. The City is seeking federal grants to implement both projects, and the board will discuss them tonight.

There are two properties along West Colfax that are expected to be redeveloped. One–at 17270 W.Colfax (map) was recently approved by the Planning Commission and now will go to City Council for their approval. The second project–17200 W. Colfax (map) is currently not scheduled for any city approvals.

In the Central Neighborhoods Urban Renewal Area, there is a plan to improve bicycle safety near the high school, but construction has been delayed until later this year or possibly next year.

The board will consider their three Urban Renewal areas–West Colfax, Central Neighborhoods, and Parfet/Briarwood–and discuss what, if any, projects they hope to fund in those areas.

The July 10, 1990 Golden Transcript broke a story that shook the community to its foundations: Golden firefighter Tom Young had been severely injured while rescuing a hang glider on Lookout Mountain. He was in critical condition at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver.

“At this point, he is a paraplegic,” Assistant Fire Chief Larry Trumble said Monday, adding it was not yet known whether the paralysis would be permanent.

Tom was 29 at the time of the accident, married and the father of two young children.

Desperate to help, the community set up a Tom Young Assistance Fund at a local bank and began to plan fund-raisers. In the meantime, they waited, hoping for better news.

To be continued…
