6-7:30PM Great Decisions 2023 @ Golden Library

6:30PM Planning Commission Study Session @ City Hall
The Planning Commission will discuss the “A Roadmap to Net Zero Buildings Draft Recommendations.” There’s been some interesting debate on this subject. The Sustainability board has concluded that these steps are necessary to meet our sustainability goals, and that the cost of building net zero is more than offset over the life of a building with reduced energy costs. Developers have provided public comments saying that building net zero is prohibitively expensive and that most building sites are not big enough to accommodate enough renewable energy (solar panels). The developers say you can have either “Affordable” or “Sustainable,” but not both.

They will begin discussing proposed changes to our zoning code. Last year, Council approved a substantial change to our residential code. Based on the projects that have come to the Commission since that change, the Planning Department is recommending several adjustments to the residential code.

The big focus this year will be redesigning the commercial building code. This includes apartment buildings. I will be interested to hear the discussion of parking requirements (p. 109), as several of the building types require only one parking spot per dwelling unit. This may result in a lot of spillover parking in adjacent streets.

Food Drive

The January 18th Golden High School boys basketball game against Wheat Ridge was postponed until February 6th due to weather. The Food Drive to honor GHS basketball parent and Jeffco teacher Jamie Wiggins who passed away in 2018 is extended to Monday February 6th.

Items can be dropped at the high school main office during school hours. The food drive final collection will be Monday February 6th when Golden plays Wheat Ridge at GHS. Bring your food/cash donations to the game between 5 and 8pm to support area families and school children in need. This is coordinated by BGOLDN (formally Golden backpack program) The GHS boys basketball program is very grateful for the community’s continued support of their annual food drive.

Golden History Moment

Colorado Transcript – January 31, 1963

The January 31, 1963 Colorado Transcript reported that Foss Drug Store was beginning a year-long celebration of the store’s golden anniversary. The paper told of Henry Foss, Sr. purchasing the store in 1913. In the early days, the store grossed $100 on a good day. Many expansions and service improvements took place over the years and by 1963, the store was grossing $1.5 million/year.

That issue of the paper included several articles about Foss topics, including their new parking lot, their photo department, the Carriage Room restaurant, worker benefits, the cosmetics department, the warehouse, and the card and candy departments.

Foss Drug was an anchor store of the downtown shopping district until its closure in 2007.
