Golden History Moment

The July 12, 1934 Colorado Transcript included an article about Paul Ficht’s retirement. Mr. Ficht was born in Germany in 1861. He came to the U.S. as a young man, arriving in Golden in 1884.

In 1890, he purchased a log building on the site now occupied by the Buffalo Rose restaurant. There, he opened a “cigar and banking store” called “Paul’s Place.” Evidently he sold beer as well.

In the January 12, 1950 Colorado Transcript, George M. Kimball considered a public health issue and hearkened back to his earlier days at the Transcript.

Tavern proprietors of one English; town have been ordered to cease serving beer in glasses to dogs, as the medical officer asserts there is danger infection might be carried, inasmuch as bartenders only rinse the glasses. About 55 years ago in Golden I had a beer drinking dog, but there was no likelihood of contamination being carried on his account. Whoever was “settin’ ’em up” would hold the glass high, tipped so a small stream trickled. Monte would sit on his hunkers, catch the amber liquid on his tongue, then put where all good beer belongs. Many’s the time we upstairs in the Transcript office would put a dime in the bucket and send Monte to Paul Ficht’s for our “growler” of beer. Never once did he fail in the errand, but always demanded his fair share immediately after delivery. Wish I had that kind of a dog now.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
