Buffalo Bill Days Preview
Buffalo BIll Days starts today, with a golf tournament at Applewood Golf Course. The main party will start tomorrow night at 5, in Parfet Park, and will run all weekend, with lots of music, food, crafts, and activities for kids. The parade will be Saturday morning and the car show and mutton bustin’ will take place on Sunday.
Here’s a hot tip: the Golden Firefighters Pancake Breakfast is always a delightful community event, and a great way to start the day before the parade on Saturday. The one drawback is that the line to buy admission tickets tends to be long. You can SKIP THE LINE! Just stop in at the firehouse (map) today or tomorrow and buy your tickets ahead of time–no waiting!
Golden History Moment
The July 28, 1978 Golden Transcript included an article titled “Subdivision proposed near Heritage Square.” It described a 91-acre planned unit development on land owned by Leon Bachman. The area would be called “Heritage Hills.” The first phase, to be called “Heritage Dells,” called for 218 single family homes, a 4.6 acre park, and a pedestrian-bicycle path.
The City Planner said that the City could accommodate the new water taps but would need to install new water lines and build a new water tank. He also said that eventually we would need an elementary school and junior high in that area.
This map, which appeared in the June 1, 1982 Golden Transcript, showed that Heritage Dells was the first of many neighborhoods in that part of town. It would be followed by Tripp Ranch, Eagle Ridge, Stonebridge, and other subdivisions. Shelton Elementary was built in Heritage Dells, opening in 1994. Rather than building a new junior high at the south end of town, Bell Middle School was expanded. Heritage Dells park was built, as promised in the original proposal.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
