12-7PM Holiday Art Market Member Preview

Foothills Art Center had hoped to hold the Holiday Art Market (HART) in their new Astor House location last year. Construction delays made this impossible, so they held it in the original building (now the Foothills Art Center Creative Campus) one last time. THIS YEAR, IT'S IN THE ASTOR HOUSE!

The members-only preview is today, from 12-7PM. You can become a member for as little as $0: join here.

The 49th Annual Holiday Art Market will open to the public tomorrow.

    • 7PM The Rick Lewis Project @ Buffalo Rose

This Classic Rock concert benefits the Alzheimer’s Association.  This is the quite possibly the easiest and most entertaining way to support a great cause.

Buy a table personally or through your company and either come yourself and/or give it to some of your employees as a cool benefit. The Rick Lewis Project is an excellent band and it’ll be a great time.

We're donating everything that we make on this show to the Alzheimer’s Association. https://www.alz.org/ The Rick Lewis Project is a Denver-based stalwart of the Classic Rock scene. Formed in early 2014 by long-time Denver Broncos radio and TV personality Rick Lewis, the Rick Lewis Project seamlessly blends a high-energy mixture of classic rock covers with a few originals sung by the talented Sarah Hornbuckle. The band is made up of many well-known local names in the Colorado music scene:Rick Lewis-Drums

Golden History: Before the Holiday Art Market

The Original Foothills Art Center - now their Creative Campus

Foothills Art Center was founded in 1968, and of course, they’ve always needed to raise funds. The very first year, three prominent artists–Hal Shelton, Ron Waelcli, and Tom Berger–contributed paintings. Foothills accepted one dollar contributions in exchange for a chance to win one of those paintings.

    Golden Transcript, December 6, 1973

That first fund-raiser evolved into a holiday art auction. The auction art was on display during the first week of December and sealed bids were accepted.

Holiday Art Market in 1980 - Golden History Museum Collection

By the mid-1970s, the Holiday Art Market had evolved:

Members of the Foothills Art Center in Golden and invited artist friends are planning to set up a Holiday Art Market beginning Sunday. Creative imaginations and ingenious skills combine to produce an abundance of one-of-a-kind hand-crafted gifts and decorations for an old-fashioned Christmas.

    , October 21, 1976

This year, the Holiday Art Market has moved to their more easily accessible Astor House location. Their members-only opening happens today between 12 and 7PM. It opens to the public tomorrow!

    Golden History: Reliving 2016

    Lectures

In November of 2016, the museums were hosting some interesting lectures:

    • Mountaineering – 100 Years of Colorado’s National Parks & Monuments
    • Railroad Museum – History of Dining Car China
    • Geology Museum – The Potential for Transformation in the Geosciences & Engineering Disciplines, in the Mining Industry, and Even in Academia Using the Principles of Applied Neuroscience
    • Golden History Museum – The Denver and Interurban Streetcar
    • Quilt Museum – Persuasion by Hanky: Politics, Policies and Patriots

    More Arts & Culture

    • The Library hosted Teens After Dark: Geeks Who Read Trivia Night.
    • Golden High School performed Shakespeare to the Death; Mines Little Theater presented Flowers for Algernon, and Miners Alley Playhouse opened their holiday play, A Christmas Carol.
    • To celebrate the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the library offered classes on Care of Magical Creatures.
    • Foothills Art Center opened their annual Holiday Art Market.
    • The Railroad Museum opened the Polar Express and sold out almost immediately.

    Downtown Parking

The Planning Department and their consultants began floating the idea of having people park in the former Coors lot and riding a shuttle into the shopping area. Early responses were rather tepid:

    • “People don’t even want to park a block away from their destination—I don’t see them parking half a mile away and waiting for a bus.”
    • “I’m not sure about having people dropped off at bus stops. If we don’t have people strolling through downtown to get back to their car, they may not stop for coffee or ice cream or window shopping.”
    • “I have employees arriving before 6 AM and others leaving late at night. Unless the shuttle operates 24 hours a day, they won’t want to park over there.”
    • “The problem with the current parking is lack of enforcement of the 2 hour limit.”
    • “My employees are all women, and they’re not comfortable walking into a parking garage at night.”
    • “Can we arrange for Golden residents to pre-register with the parking system, so we don’t have to use the kiosks or app every time we park?”

    Other City Business

    • City Council removed a section from our criminal code that prohibited “aggressive begging” and added one making possession of an illegal weapon “unlawful.”
    • The Spot Bar and Grill’s liquor license was transferred to a new restaurant called The Cast Iron Tavern.
    • The Public Art Commission reviewed the City’s art collection voted to get rid of the bronze pieces depicting a family of bears and kids sledding.
    • The Planning Commission approved the site plan for a building at 24th & Jackson.
    • The Sustainability Committee hosted a Sustainability Night to highlight green building techniques.
    • The Downtown Development Authority reviewed suggestions from the public about downtown. Ideas included more outdoor dining; less outdoor dining; more signs; fewer signs; building affordable housing downtown; more frequent trash collection; developing the Foss lot and the block beyond that; requiring new buildings to provide plentiful onsite parking; adding statues of skiers, hikers, and wildlife–no abstract art.
