1PM Arts and Culture Commission - Grant Subcommittee Meeting @ City Hall Annex

Google Street Images

This meeting may not be broadcast or open to the public: I believe the City Hall Annex building (map) requires a keycard to enter. Send comments on any of the following topics to acc@cityofgolden.net.

The meeting agenda says that the subcommittee will discuss the following:

  • Review grant program qualifications
  • Updates to application and tier system
  • Awardee requirements
  • Discuss 2027 grant timeline

No additional information is available, but this sounds similar to the changes recently made to the Thriving Communities grants. Formerly, applications for those grants were submitted to a subcommittee of CBAC, and a group of citizens/voters reviewed them. Now the grants are reviewed and distributed by city staff, without citizen involvement.

If the same pattern follows for Arts and Culture grants, members of the Arts & Culture commission may no longer be involved in the grant review and distribution process.

2-3PM Virtual: Active Minds Monday

Today’s topic: The Future of Bees

Found on every continent except Antarctica, bees are vital pollinators that help make much of the food humans eat possible. In recent years, however, crucial bee species have experienced significant loss. Since the 1990s, the bumblebee population has plunged almost 90%. Additionally, since 2006, a disease called Colony Collapse Disorder has afflicted honeybee populations. This session will be buzzing with the world of bees and examine what is affecting these important species. Save your spot for this Zoom program

Whether you’re looking for a particular medium to express yourself, or if you already work in acrylics, oils, watercolor, drawing, or fabric, the ideas remain the same: color, dark and light, composition, line, and more. This class meets weekly in June. Register

6-7:30PM Arts & Culture Commission Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

The board will approve the minutes from the April 6th meeting and listen to public comment.

Tonight's topics include the following:

  • A representative from the Parks Department will describe the work on Lions Park. Depending on the cost of that project, it may trigger the need for a new piece of public art.
  • Staff will tell the board about work on the Arts & Culture section of the City website.
  • The History Museum director will summarize the museum's strategic planning process.
  • The Art in Public Places subcommittee will lead a discussion about the remaining funds available for art in Ulysses Park.
  • Len Matheo (Artistic Director at Miners Alley and member of the Arts & Culture Board) will tell the group about the inaugural "Comfort and Comedy Festival," which took place at several venues around town in February.

Golden History: 6,750 Pounds of Ice

The center building became Treffeisen’s City Meat Market in 1916

The June 1, 1916 Colorado Transcript announced that the City Meat Market, formerly located at 10th and Ford, was moving into its new building on Washington Avenue.

A. J. Treffeisen has taken a five-year lease on the Coors block on Washington Avenue, and the building has been fitted up with new and modern fixtures. An immense new vault, having a capacity of 6,750 pounds of ice, has been installed. This vault will need refilling only four or five times in a year… The back room and the basement of the building will be used for the manufacture of prepared meats and for storage. Mr. Treffeisen and his family will occupy the second floor.
