Golden History: A Pretty Golden Home

“Pretty Golden Homes,” as shown in the Colorado Transcript, 1905 and 1906

In 1905 and 1906, the Transcript ran a series of articles titled “Pretty Golden Homes.” Each one included a photo and some information about a house and the family that lived there. Unfortunately, most of the scanned images are of poor quality, but the articles are interesting. Some of the houses are still around.

The December 14, 1905 Colorado Transcript featured the house at 1510 Washington, home of Mrs . Ella Rubey.

One of the handsomest and most convenient residences in Golden is that of Mrs . Ella Rubey , located on Washington avenue , between Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets, directly opposite the Jefferson county court house. It was erected as a speculation in 1899 by P. O. Unger, and disposed of a year later to the Rubey family, who have made several important improvements in the property since that time. It is constructed of Golden pressed brick, and the workmanship throughout is of a high class . The house has eight large and conveniently arranged rooms, with commodious basement, bathrooms, closets and pantry. There is an excellent furnace heating plant, and the house is electric lighted. The exterior of this fine home consists of one and one-half lots, the well-kept lawn and flower beds making this one of Golden’s beauty spots.

The house stayed in the Rubey family until 1945, then went through several hands, serving as both a residence and a commercial property. Foothills Art Center acquired the property in 1984 and used it as exhibit space, classrooms, offices, and gift shop at various times. They sold it in 2022 in preparation for their expansion into the Astor House.
