More About the Fire

Goltra Fire in Clear Creek Canyon - Photo by Chris Davell
As of last night, the County reported that the fire in Clear Creek Canyon (which they're calling the "Goltra Fire") was 60% contained. They also stated that the area in which the firefighters are working is treacherous--very steep, slippery rock footing, and lots of rattlesnakes.

The firefighters had support from helicopters dropping 1,000 gallon buckets of water on the flames. They were collecting the water from Golden's drinking water pond.

Let's hope it's over today!

5-8PM Open House and Exhibit Reception @ The Golden History Museum

Golden History Museum - Photo by Richard Luckin
Celebrate the opening of two new exhibits at GHM later this summer and enjoy free, live music from Alibi, as well as purchased beverages from CODA Brewing and freshly made snacks from Roadrunner Food Truck. We will also offer informal talks with the curator and director.
We Are Still Here: The Endurance of Native Jewels
In this exhibit, we define jewel as both a precious item as well as a woman of strength and importance. Explore how Indigenous women have persevered through hundreds of years of oppression and numerous attempts to destroy their culture. Featuring modern Native fashions that utilize ancient Indigenous jewels, learn about prominent Native women in contemporary American society. Not only are Native Americans still here; they have endured, and they are thriving.
Clear Creek Room: The Heart of Golden
Surrounded by North and South Table Mountains, Clear Creek has drawn people to this area for millennia. Golden History Museum is excited to debut the Clear Creek Room, a multipurpose gallery and meeting space. Visitors can relax in this newly remodeled area with a view of the creek, while they learn about its cultural, industrial, recreational, and natural history.

The August 22, 1940 Colorado Transcript reported that more than 3,000 people had visited the Jefferson County Pioneer Museum during the town’s annual Golden Days celebration.
Golden’s History Museum was originally a project of the Roosevelt administration’s Works Progress Administration (WPA). When funding ran out, the museum was closed. Occasionally it was opened for special occasions (such as Golden Days) and staffed by volunteers.

The museum went through several homes–first the old North School at Washington & 6th Street, then the old Courthouse at Washington & 15th. When the old Courthouse was demolished in the early ’60s, the County turned the museum over to the City of Golden. The City was building its new municipal center at the time, and space was included for the museum. It remained in City Hall until the old library next door became available–and there it remains!
Join the History Museum staff tonight from 5-8PM for the opening of two new exhibits: We Are Still Here: The Endurance of Native Jewels, and Clear Creek Room: The Heart of Golden.
Many thanks to Esther Kettering for sponsoring Golden History Moments for the month of August.
