Dr. Jeff Squier

Structured light imaging: optical metrology for applications from advanced manufacturing to the biosciences

Ever wonder what your brain and a 3D printer have in common? Answer: They are both difficult to image through using light in the visible spectrum! In this talk, we will walk you through a new optical technology that began as a novel tool being developed for neuroscientists as a non-invasive method for quantifying structure and function in the brain. Not surprisingly, as we developed this instrument, we discovered other applications for this metrology which in this case involved advanced manufacturing: using high-average power lasers to 3D print metal structures.

A challenge in imaging inside the brain is that the optical signals used to measure the dynamic function of interest to the biologist/neuroscientist is that the optical signals get scattered by the tissue, obscuring the measurement. This new tool can make measurements, even when the optical signals are highly scattered! Similarly, in a laser metal 3D printer, the interaction of the melting metal and laser results in a highly scattering environment: it is desirable to be able to “look-inside” this interaction volume in real-time to understand the physics of the light-matter interaction and watch for the conditions that could results in defects when printing a metal part. Using “structured light” not only can we meet the challenges in these scattering environments, but we can also achieve a spatial definition that exceeds classical limits (i.e., our images resolve small features better than can be achieved with a standard microscope)!

Finally classical images treat light as a wave phenomenon, but we are now in the era of quantum imaging – what happens when we roll quantum effects into our imaging system? We will describe how quantum data is changing the way we think about imaging, and what it means for our imaging capability….

Jeff Squier is a Mines Distinguished Professor, in the Department of Physics where he has been faculty for 23 years. His research interests include the development of femtosecond laser sources and the application of these lasers to micromachining, and optical metrology in general.

Golden History: History of a Corner Lot

Eagle Brewing Company as shown in the 1893 Golden Globe Industrial Edition This was located at 11th and Washington–now the site of the Golden Hotel.

Yesterday’s history article reviewed the arrival of each of our present-day craft breweries. I included this picture from 1893, which shows the brewery that used to stand at 11th and Washington. One of my readers asked what else had been on that corner, prior to the Golden Hotel. I may not have the complete chronology, but here are several things I’ve encountered in my readings.

T.P. Boyd and family ran a hotel on that spot during the gold rush years (1859).

Crisman & Fitzpatrick built a “flouring” mill there in 1867. That mill burned but Fitzpatrick (sans Crisman) rebuilt it, this time using fireproof brick.

In 1891, the vacant mill was converted for use as a brewery. Sometime later, a small building that served as a photographer’s gallery was added between the brewery and Washington Avenue.

Miss Genia Stillman and Miss Emma Cook, the photographers, have concluded not to re-locate their gallery, and the building, which is one of the oldtimers of the city, will be torn down to make way for the new Christian church. Golden people will be sorry to lose these popular ladies.

In 1906, the Christian Church acquired the corner property and planned to build a large and elaborate church there. They got as far as building the foundation and basement level, but the congregation dissolved before completing the project. In 1913, the partial building was purchased by a group of blacksmiths, who opened a garage in the structure.

Extensive improvements are planned by Blood Bros, and Ball, who have purchased the Christian Church property, and they will turn the same into a first class automobile garage and machine shop. At present a concrete addition is being added on the north side of the building, which will be utilized solely as a machine and blacksmith shop. The balance of the building will be used for the storage and repair of cars. A number of local people have already reserved space for their cars. With the up-to-date equipment that this firm already has and the contemplated addition of new machinery there will be no repair work too large or small that they cannot handle.

The garage gradually expanded and began selling used cars. By the 1940s, it was known as “Golden Motors.”

The one-story building was demolished in 1999 and replaced by the Golden Hotel.
