The July 6, 1933 Colorado Transcript cited an alarming number of injuries to Golden's citizens.

  • Arthur Williams in Fall from Steps at Home, Breaks Foot
  • Body of Second Mines Student is Found in North Canadian Lake
  • Crash on Paved Road [Colfax] Injures 3 Autoists
  • Little Monty Pike Has Operation for Removal of Appendix
  • Milton Ray Suffers Severe Burns When Gas Heater Explodes
  • Joe Garramone Hurt in Ball Game Sunday
  • Woman Severs Artery Alighting from Car at Buffalo Bill's Grave

Paying all those doctor's bills must have been difficult. The Great Depression had dragged on for several years by then. Golden's bank had closed, taking the citizens' savings with it, and many residents were unemployed. With no Federal or State social safety nets, local residents had organized a Golden Welfare Fund.

The paper reported that the scrip program (a sort of local currency, only usable in local businesses) was expected to net about $300 for the Welfare Fund.

The Publisher's personal column was more cheerful than the actual news. She seemed to feel that Golden was getting past the worst of the Depression. That may well have been true, since the end of Prohibition meant that Coors was hiring again.

With men everywhere going to work it would seem as though this relief business was about over. That's fine, for the American people are not beggars, and do not want a dole when they can get work.

She observed that the business district was looking good:

People who visit Golden, or just drive through the city, are impressed by the splendid appearance of the stores on Washington avenue. The newly decorated fronts of Koenig Mercantile company, City Market, Meyer’s Market, Peggy’s Lunch and Grimes Radio Shop, greatly add to the attractiveness of the avenue and demonstrate the progressiveness of the community, and the support given local stores by local people.

She concluded with a list of events that she would prefer to write about:

Some of these days we are going to come out with a paper stating...that the bank has opened and the deposits are guaranteed ... that Golden's water supply has been taken care of so folks can irrigate whenever they wish: that Golden people are patronizing Golden institutions exclusively; that new homes are being built—and then what is there going to be to write about...?
