6PM Mobility & Transportation Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

Proposed "protected bike lane" to be added to Ford and Jackson Streets

    • Meeting Agenda (very slow to download because it contains some big drawings)
    • Watch the meeting streaming live starting at 6PM
    • Attend the meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers - 911 10th Street - (map)
    • Send comments on any of the following topics to jpuhr@cityofgolden.net BEFORE 3PM
    • Provide in-person comment (limited to 3 minutes) during the meeting, at 6PM.

The Board will adjourn to a Study Session after Public Comment. Their topics tonight include:

  • safety improvements for Highway 93
  • adding a "protected bike lane" to Ford and Jackson through the Central Neighborhoods
  • staff reports regarding Hwy 93, Colfax, and pedestrian improvements on Arapahoe St.

The second topic (adding the protected bike lane) has caused a lot of consternation for the people who live along that street—particularly those on the west side. The plan calls for installing a concrete curb, to separate the bike lane from the car lanes. To make room for the new curb, they plan to move both traffic lanes to the west, abutting directly against the curb. The residents, some of whom have small children, are concerned about the loss of the buffering lane. Many drivers speed through that section, and the residents don't want the traffic brought even closer to their yards.

The residents have submitted public comment both in writing and at public meetings. Here's an excerpt of a letter from homeowner Melissa Thumm:

As the mother of two small children who will no longer be safe in their own front yard, and the other children and elderly people who will face similar risks (though not as frequently as my children), I struggle to understand how the City can ignore our concerns and eliminate the buffer that is the difference between a “scare” and a serious injury or fatality.... Spending $3M of taxpayer money to build a known safety hazard… I simply don’t get it.

Turbidity (look it up!)

Photos after a rainstorm by Joyce Davell

After big rainfalls, Clear Creek turns temporarily not-so-clear. The sudden increase in flow picks up soil, sand, and rocks from the sides and bottom of the creekbed and carries them along until the flow settles down and the particulates sink back to the bottom.

Golden History: 1868

Golden in 1868 - Denver Public Library Special Collections

The Denver Public Library has a great collection of historic photos, including more than 1,000 of Golden. The one above is one of my favorites. Taken in 1868 (nine years after the town's founding), this photo shows a few buildings that are still with us and several that are long gone.

Buildings that are still here - enlarge

The Loveland building (now the Old Capitol Grill) appears in this photo, as does the Astor House. The Harrison Block (Del's Tonsorial Parlor, Humble House Coffee, and Creekside Jewelers) may be a little harder to identify, but it is one of the oldest buildings in Golden's downtown.

Buildings that are gone - enlarge

As for buildings that are gone: Fitzpatrick's Mill was visible, in its location at the edge of Clear Creek. The wood frame store buildings, seen in many pioneer-era photos, were still there. I was intrigued to spot two wells and a few probable outhouses--necessities in the pre-plumbing era. They were right there, where we now park our cars!
