Golden History: Unexpected Addition to the Household

Lemert Hardware ads from 1916-1918

Last month, I wrote about The Era of Creepy Mascots. Last night, in looking for a January 16th topic, I came across another eye-catching advertising image. This one wasn't "creepy--" it was just odd.

Colorado Transcript - September 23, 1896

For about 30 years (1895-1925), Linder Hardware store ran regular display ads in the Colorado Transcript. Many of them featured "Round Oak" heating stoves.

Colorado Transcript - January 16, 1908

The January 16, 1908 issue included the dramatic addition of a cow, dressed in women's clothing, huddled over a Round Oak stove. She is telling her (son? grandson?), who is apparently Dutch (and human)--that "I would have caught my death o'cold without it!"

There is no explanation as to why there's a cow (with a comb, a brush, a shawl, and a fine head of hair) in the house, but it certainly attracted my attention.
