Golden History: Millinery and Sudden Death

The May 28, 1914 Colorado Transcript included an inspiring array of ads for local businesses, including the one above, showing a particularly fetching hat. Less welcome were the two articles describing fatal accidents to two Golden-area children.

A two-year-old child was playing in the yard while his mother was hanging clothes on a line nearby. He was bitten just below the knee by one of the largest rattlesnakes “…ever seen in this vicinity. It measured 40 inches and had twelve rattles.” The mother killed the snake and called the neighbors for help. They applied a tourniquet to the leg and tried to suck out the poison. Dr. Kelly was called, but could do nothing. The child died the same evening.

A ten-year-old boy was taking cattle to pasture when he fell from a horse. “The saddle turned and the boy plunged to the ground, striking on his head.” Dr. Kelly was called and expressed the opinion that death had probably been instantaneous.
