Items on the Consent Agenda are considered non-controversial, not needing discussion. Everything in this section will be approved at once, with one vote. Any councilor wishing to discuss one of the issues can request that it be removed from the consent agenda and discussed and voted on separately. This is tonight's Consent item:

Borrowing $9.4 million to replace the pump station and irrigation system at the golf course

This project includes "full replacement including more than 100,000 linear feet of underground piping, installation of nearly 2,100 new sprinklers, and implementation of a modern satellite-based control system. Work will also extend to the adjacent Splash Water Park."

The City will use $2.1 million from the Golf Fund and will borrow the rest. The maximum repayment shall not exceed $12.2 million. Because the money is being borrowed through Certificates of Participation (the same mechanism used for the new City Hall), no citizen approval is required. Learn more.

Golden History: A Brief, Delicious Era

The original Jolly Rancher store on Washington Avenue in Golden – Golden History Museum collection

Bill and Dorothy Harmsen will open the Jolly Rancher ice cream shop at 1113 Washington avenue, at the Welcome to Golden arch this week, and as a feature of the Grand Opening Saturday, May 28, will give FREE Rancho Creme cones to all who visit their shop.
Colorado Transcript
- May 26, 1949

Jolly Rancher is world-famous for its hard candy, but it started as an ice cream shop right here in Golden. The Harmsens operated the Golden store from 1949-1951. During that time, they learned that even the best ice cream is a hard sell during the winter, so they began formulating candy. Their first big hit was the cinnamon-flavored Fire Stix. From there, they moved on to fruit-flavored hard candy. That was popular enough that they closed the ice cream shop and opened a candy factory on Ward Road in Wheat Ridge.

The company was eventually purchased by Hershey, so the candies are no longer made in Colorado.

The Golden History Museum has a collection of Jolly Rancher artifacts donated by the Harmsen family. Learn more….
