Birdseye View of Construction in Golden - November, 2025

Drone footage of several construction projects currently in Golden - watch it
Pat Klein has produced a video update of our several construction projects around town. He's been doing this periodically, and it's fun to watch the buildings progress. He's been documenting the new Mines apartments (west of Hwy 6), the new undergrad dorm (19th & Illnois), The Col (17270 Colfax), Ulysses Park, Lena Gulch, Canyon View Apartments (off Golden Gate Canyon Road), Clayworks (9th and Ford), and most recently Avere (next to King Soopers).

Historic photo - 10th Mountain Division Resource Center, Denver Public Library and tonight's speaker, Sydney Mauch
Topic: Women in Combat
Speaker: Sydney Mauch – History Colorado
Brewery: Bruz Beers
This presentation will explore the story of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. From its groundbreaking creation in 1942 to the rigorous training its members underwent, the program highlights the vital roles women played in supporting the U.S. war effort.
Attendees will learn how the WACs proved their value in traditionally male-dominated spaces, and how their contributions challenged societal norms, laying the groundwork for future generations of women in uniform.
Special focus will be given to a unique WAC detachment stationed at Camp Hale, Colorado—a remote and rugged training site best known for housing the famed 10th Mountain Division.
Through the lens of this detachment’s experiences, the program offers a closer look at the challenges, resilience and patriotism of the women who served.
Featured Speaker
In addition to making her second appearance at Golden Beer Talks, Sydney Mauck is the Anschutz Military Collections Specialist at History Colorado.
A Colorado local, she developed a deep appreciation for the state’s history through her coursework at the University of Denver. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology with minors in History and Psychology, with a concentration on museum work.
Passionate about using museum collections to tell stories, Sydney has built a career around making history accessible and meaningful through exhibitions and public programming.
Her professional experience includes working at institutions such as the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Zoo and the National Park Service at Kalaupapa National Park, where she honed skills in collections management.
Sydney joined History Colorado in 2022 as the Anschutz Military Collections Specialist. In this role, she oversees a military collection of more than 10,000 artifacts and represents History Colorado’s 10th Mountain Division Resource Center, which works in partnership with the Denver Public Library. Sydney is honored to help preserve and share the stories of the Division and to work closely with descendants of its veterans to honor their enduring legacy.

408 18th Street
The board will consider providing a Certificate of Appropriateness for a remodel of 408 18th St. (map). This house is located in the East Street Historic District but is considered a non-contributing structure.

The meeting packet (p. 5) describes the changes as follows:
The applicant wishes to enlarge the house over the garage, expand the garage to hold two vehicles, add new façade materials around the entire structure, add a new mid-level entrance that is partially enclosed, and add a roof deck over the garage. The new façade materials will be stucco, natural wood and pre-weathered wood siding with a new, standing seam metal roof which is partially approximately three feet above the existing primary roof line.

Old Golden High School/Future Clayworks Hotel
The board will then move into study session, in which they will discuss plans for the 1924 Golden High School building (map). This building served as the high school from 1924-1956, and then as the Golden Junior High from 1956-1988. The building is on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. It was designed by architect Eugene Groves and is significant as an example of the Beaux-Arts style. It served as the American Mountaineering Center from 1994 until AC Development acquired it in 2024.

AC Development plans to convert the building into a 150-160 room hotel. They plan to keep the 1924 core of the building and remove several later additions. They will build a 4-story addition over the current parking lot. See pp. 19-64 of the meeting packet for more information about this project.

Golden History: Reliving November, 2011

This photo, taken in November of 2011, has some historic interest. The newly-painted shop at 1205 Washington Avenue was "The Alley" at that time. El Callejon (see inset) has been in that location for at least ten years now.

I started this website in 2007. For the first four years, I overwrote the news on the home page every day. I now regret the loss of that archival material. In 2011, I switched to a different system, and since then, every day's news has been saved into an archive.
Last night I was reviewing the events of November, 2011. I thought you might enjoy reading some highlights:
- Marjorie Sloan was elected as Mayor. Saoirsa Charis-Graves was elected to District 1 and Marcie Miller to District 2.
- The Golden museums celebrated Night at the Museums with free admission on November 4th. The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum was exhibiting star quilts. The CSM Geology Museum had 11 new exhibits, including moon rocks, emeralds, opals, and silver. Foothills Art Center was hosting the National Watermedia Show. The American Mountaineering Museum had an exhibit of Brad Washburn photos. The Astor House Hotel Museum had Victorian parlor games, and tableaux, and the Golden History Museum was set up to broadcast live on the Mines radio station as visitors added their own percussion line to the Golden Overture.

- The Hunchback of Notre Dame was playing at Heritage Square Music Hall. Golden High School was presenting Oliver. Miners Alley Playhouse opened their holiday play, A Rocky Mountain Christmas.

- The Mountaineering Museum held their monthly Thirsty Third Thursday event, featuring live music and donated beer.
- The Holiday Art Market opened at Foothills Art Center.
- The Buffalo Bill Museum was celebrating being named "Museum of the Year" for 2011 by True West magazine.
- Heritage Square Children's Theater opened their holiday play, Santa's Nutcracker.
The Astor House Hotel Museum is gone, but Foothills Art Center has moved into their old digs. The Heritage Square Opera House is gone, but the stars of their stage sang a few numbers at the Miners Alley gala this year. The Mountaineering Museum is in storage, since AC Development bought the Mountaineering Center. The Golden High School students who appeared in Oliver are now in their thirties.
Foothills Art Center has now expanded into two locations (the original building at 15th and Washington and the Astor House at 12th and Arapahoe). Miners Alley is now a Performing Arts Center, with bigger accommodations in the former Meyer Hardware and even bigger dreams for the future.
