6-7:45PM Golden Beer Talks: Saving Local News @ The Buffalo Rose

Topic: Putting More Local in Local News
Speaker: Linda Shapley
Brewery: 6 and 40

Linda Shapley is on a mission.

After more than three decades at local news outlets throughout the state, she found herself out of a job in May. She is using that setback to refocus on a new journey to find different ways to preserve Local News.

That has led her to a partnership with the League of Women Voters Colorado to manage the Eyewitness Corps, which has observers attend government meetings to provide information to share with understaffed news organizations. She’s also teaching a newswriting class at Colorado State University and partnering with teachers at Northglenn High School to create a program invested in news literacy.

In her talk, “Putting More Local in Local News,” Linda will share her insights on the challenges facing the industry, strategies for their survival, and the broader implications for community strength and resilience. She hopes to offer a compelling roadmap for sustaining the invaluable service that Local News provides.

Linda Carpio Shapley is a veteran journalist who most recently was publisher and editor for Colorado Community Media, a network that included the Golden Transcript. She has spent her career championing journalism through leadership roles at the political trade publication Colorado Politics and The Denver Post, where she left as managing editor in 2017.

Now outside of a newsroom, Linda is an adjunct instructor at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and is working with the League of Women Voters. A proud Chicana, she is especially passionate about serving diverse audiences and building sustainability for Local News so that every community has access to trusted information. She and her husband, Ed, live the empty-nest life in Thornton.

Featured Brewery: 6 and 40 Brewery

An evening hosted by Golden Beer Talks centers around a brief, informative and entertaining presentation by an expert on an irresistibly enticing topic. Each event features beer for sale from one of our local breweries, along with a variety of delicious food and drink offerings from the Buffalo Rose kitchen and bar.

It's Golden's own grassroots version of TED talks for the benefit of our own local community--and just for the fun of it. Golden Beer Talks is a nonprofit venture focused on three favorite local things--Golden and Beer and Talking!

Golden History: Golden Bus Service

Golden Bus Service routes, as detailed in the September 16, 1948 Colorado Transcript

The September 16, 1948 Colorado Transcript announced that Golden Bus Service would begin the following Monday. The operator, Dick Loyd, intended to have his bus on display at 13th and Washington on Saturday the 18th, and would give free rides to all comers that day.

Loyd planned to alternate between a north and a south route, both starting at 13th and Washington. Each loop would take 15 minutes. The fare would be 10 cents for adult and 5 cents for children and high school students. The bus would operate from 6:25AM until 11:30PM.

The service got off to a good start. The following week’s Transcript reported that kids were enjoying riding the bus, women were organizing sight-seeing parties, and the merchants were pleased to have bus service into downtown.

From the March 10, 1949 Colorado Transcript

Apparently, once the novelty wore off, ridership dropped. The following March, a notice appeared in the paper that the Golden Bus Service would be discontinued due to lack of community support.
