5:30-7PM Contemplative Memoir @ Foothills Art Center - Creative Campus

Writing a memoir may be the most challenging and consequential writing we will ever do. We think we know ourselves well enough to write about our lives, but the effort seems daunting, and its value dubious. After all, how do we begin to choose which stories to tell from all the days and years? And who cares? First of all, no life is ordinary. No life is without miracles and magic, great loss and great love. And probably no life is more crucial for our children to understand then ours, because they share more than our genetics, they share our spiritual DNA. What made us who we are, helps them see who they can become. In that sense, we leave them with more than stories. We leave them with meaning and hope. More information

6:30PM Historic Preservation Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

Tonight's topics include:

Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes to 412 18th Street (map), which is a non-contributing structure within the East Street Historic District. This is somewhat after the fact, as the changes have already been made. The owner had not realized that she was supposed to refer her changes to this board before making them. The board will now review the changes and have the opportunity to provide comments and suggestions. They have the option to pronounce the changes "appropriate" for a non-contributing structure within a Historic District.

Too Much Tin in the Trash

Tin cans for scrap salvage to be acceptable at detinning plants must be washed, labels removed, ends cut out and can flattened.
Colorado Transcript - January 28, 1943

I expected "Tin on the Hog-Back," which appeared in the July 8th, 1943 Colorado Transcript, to be about a new ore discovery. As it turned out, it contained a pointed rebuke about Golden's unpatriotic waste disposal habits.

City Council had recently discussed moving the town dump from a spot near the highway to some gulch in a less-visible location. The Transcript team decided to visit the dump for themselves.

Upon arrival, what most struck them was the appalling number of cans that people were bringing to the dump. They were supposed to be donating them for use in the war effort.

Besides being an unsightly mess right along side of one of Golden’s main feeder roads, this dump has another objectional feature. It witnesses that Golden folks have in a large measure neglected to salvage for the army their tin cans. There is enough tin on the hog-back in this one dump to blow Hitler to hell, were the shot properly placed.
